Building Permits- for Additions, Renovations, Sale

Smoke Detector/Carbon Monoxide……………………………………….$40.00

*Fire Alarm (residential fire alarm)………………………………………..$40.00

By Law the Fire Department must review all building plans for new construction, renovations and additions. Any substantial renovation, require smoke detectors be “brought up to code” meaning hardwired, battery backup & Carbon Monoxide detectors. The Fire Department offers a “walk through” before the detector heads are installed to insure proper placement of detectors. Note- we do not mark up plans.

Common Issues:

Please do not assume that your electrician will “pull” your Smoke/Carbon Monoxide detector permit, most electricions assume that an electrical permit will satisfy both, it does not. The Electrical permit is through the Building Department( http://marionma.virtualtownhall.net/Pages/MarionMA_Building/index)
The Marion Fire Department is a “call” department our inspectors work full time elsewhere and do inspections Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 3:45. It usually takes a week to schedule an appointment. Please do not wait until the last minute to obtain a permit. Permits are required by the Building Department before an Occupancy Permit will be issued. Permits must be signed and paid for at the Fire Station, appointments will be made at that time. We do not accept permits by mail.

The Fire Department is bound by Massachusetts Law to inspect and act accordingly. The office is open from 9am until 3:00pm, weekdays. We are located at 50 Spring St. (Same building as the Police). If you have any questions please feel free to call the office at (508) 748-3595.
